Best Window Cleaning Hacks You Need To Try!
There’s nothing worse in a home when there are visible marks and smears across the glass on your windows and doors. Here at SCI Windows; we have compiled a list of the best cleaning hacks that you need to try, to get your windows looking their best.
There are thousands of people in the UK searching for and testing new methods of cleaning glass; but which ones are old wives’ tales and which actually work?
Opting to use a homemade solution can be much better and also cheaper than going out and purchasing a window cleaning solution. So many different products are already sitting in the cupboards of most people’s homes already but you just didn’t realise it!
Furthermore, these homemade solutions are much better for the environment as some of the harsh chemicals found in cleaning products are not present. Plus there is less plastic waste as you can simply reuse an old spray bottle or use a bucket.
Homemade Solutions
One tried and tested solution is using warm water and white/distilled vinegar. By using one part vinegar to ten parts warm water you create a solution that is perfect for removing smears on glass. Simply apply the solution to your windows using a spray bottle; work the solution onto them using a microfibre cloth. Then with a second microfibre cloth wipe and dry the surface.
Alternatively, a squeegee could be used to wipe the solution off the glass. If you opt for the squeegee then make sure you start from the top of the window or door and work your way down, ensuring that you wipe the edges and corners after removing all the liquid. There are some issues with this method. For example, the smell of vinegar isn’t always the most pleasant, however; this can easily be fixed by using a few drops of essential oil of your choice to the mix.
Another method used by some is by adding a small amount of fabric softener to a mixture of dish soap and warm water. If you have tried to use washing-up liquid and water to clean your windows then you’ll know that it usually leaves smears and marks. This is a simple fix by adding fabric softener. Be careful not to add too much though; if the solution goes creamy or slimy then that’s too much and you need to add more water. Then follow the same steps stated before; spray, work, wipe. This solution is perfect for almost any job around the home with some people using it on their vacuums! So why not give this easy method a try, leaving your windows looking and smelling great.
Mould
Another issue that many windows develop is mould. Mould develops on windows due to condensation as a result of moisture. Mould spores can cause infections, allergies, irritations, asthma and other breathing or health problems for the people living inside your home. One method of removing mould is to use a combination of baking soda and vinegar. Both are free from harsh chemicals making it incredibly safe to use. Vinegar alone kills 82% of mould species; a figure which is increased when baking soda is added.
To take advantage of this cleaner simply create a solution with one part water, one part vinegar, and two parts baking soda. Then mix the solution until it becomes a thick paste that you can spread over the affected area. You should then leave the solution for 60 minutes or until it dries then wipe/scrub the paste with a scouring pad or stiff brush. Then repeat this until the mould is removed.
Timing
One tip that many people don’t know of is that timing is everything when cleaning windows. If the glass is warm or in direct sunlight then the solution will dry up much quicker than usual, leaving spots and streaks. So the best time to clean is early in the morning or late in the evening. The golden rule is to avoid hot sunny days.
Of course, after a certain amount of time; every window will start to look past its best, no matter how nice you keep them. Here at SCI Windows, we thrive on quality, innovation, and customer care. We’d be happy to assist you with every step of the journey on replacing your windows that are starting to look past their best.
