Window Glass & Frame Cleaning
Cobwebs can appear in window frames as well as in the mechanics of them when the window is actually open. Open the window casement as wide as you can. Then either gently use a vacuum cleaner tool or dry brush to get rid of them, or perhaps a clean damp cloth. Keep your hinges in great condition as well – don’t let them get dirty as it could lead to them squeaking and becoming hard to open.
Once dirt starts to build up on the outside of your windows, it’s best to use soap and warm water. You can also use a household glass cleaner along with a soft cloth if you’d prefer. It’s best to remove any jewellery before you start to avoid scratching the glass on the windows.
To remove soapy water from you glass, use a clean squeegee to work from top to bottom in a reverse S pattern. Every so often, wipe the squeegee blade on a clean piece of material to avoid smearing dirt around. Remove remaining water with a damp chamois or microfibre cloth and dry the windowsill. Avoid paper towels or cloths that might leave lint on the glass.
If you’ve got leaded glass, then avoid putting too much pressure on the windows as, over time it can make the lead dislodge slightly.
When cleaning the frames, you can again use warm soapy water. Make sure you get all the way around the window and getting rid of any abrasive dirt that could scratch your windows.
How Often Should I Clean my New Windows?
Depending on where you live, you might need to clean your windows more frequently. If you’re living in a built-up area in a town or a city, you should aim to clean your windows every month or so. You will be amazed at the dirt build-up in busy areas! If you’re living in the countryside; you should only need to clean your windows when you see they are in need of it, perhaps only twice a year, to keep them in pristine condition.
You may decide to clean your windows on a sunny day as you can see the dirt! In reality, it’s best to aim for a cloudy day, otherwise the sun is likely to dry the glass too quickly, resulting in streaks. Then you will just need to do them all again!
When cleaning your windows, you should always make sure to avoid all solvent-based or abrasive cleaners. This will affect the silicone seals in the window and may cause them to perish faster in the long run.
