Why are French Doors called French Doors?

French Doors are an ever-popular sight in homes across the UK. SCI Windows have fitted a number of fabulous french doors to countless houses across Surrey and South London.

But unlike Bi-Fold doors, or Patio Doors; which are named after how they work or where they are for, French Doors are a little different. But why are French Doors called French Doors?

The simple answer is, they originated in France! They were originally developed in French homes during the 16th and 17th Centuries. However, it’s said that the French took the design of the French Door from Italian architecture.

A lot of French architecture from this period was centred around letting plenty of light into the building. Today, French Doors really help to do the same thing, creating light and space as well as ease of access to the outside.
